Measles outbreaks have been in the news a lot. What are 5 quick facts about transmission that our office should be aware of?

Here are 5 quick facts to know about measles.

  1. It is highly contagious. Individuals who are not immune have a 90% chance of becoming infected if they are close to someone with measles.
  2. The virus can live up to 2 hours in an airspace where an infected person coughed or sneezed.
  3. It can be spread when others breathe contaminated air or touch infected surfaces and then touch their eyes, nose, or mouth.
  4. If a susceptible worker is exposed to measles, a post-exposure vaccine should be administered within 72 hrs.
  5. The 1st dose of the vaccine is 93% effective, and the 2nd dose is 97%.
