OSHA: How should our office prepare for persons who have been exposed to monkeypox?

First and foremost, train your employees. They should be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of monkeypox. Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent potential exposures and know how to treat.

• Symptoms are typically flu-like with a rash that can spread with direct, personal, close, & skin-to-skin contact.
• Clinical workers should don gloves, gown, face shields or goggles with side shields, and a NIOSH approved respirator upon entering the patient’s room.
• Vaccines are available for treatment.

Healthcare facilities should refer to the CDC for additional and current guidance.

Q: If your practice uses a payment app for payment processing or transaction-only purposes a BAA is not required.

A: True. However, it is very important to monitor how the app is used or restrict its use to be sure no additional features are added to your practice’s account that will require a BAA.
