OSHA
We have a worker who tested positive for covid-19 and is in self-isolation. What is the time frame for healthcare workers to return to work after experiencing mild to moderate symptoms with suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection?
A symptom-based strategy is currently recommended which depends on the time of the initial symptom onset, whether the symptoms are improving, and whether the worker is immunocompromised. Workers with mild to moderate illness who are not severely immunocompromised generally return to work after at least 10 days have passed since the symptoms first appeared if symptoms are improving, and when at least 24 hours have passed since the last fever without the use of fever-reducing medications.
A test-based strategy is not recommended except in certain scenarios because it could detect viral shredding resulting in a positive covid-19 test, and this does not necessarily indicate infection. State and local health departments may adopt these recommendations to respond to rapid changes in a particular locale.
